From People to Wildlife: The Evolution of My Artistic Journey

Growing up in Sedona

Nestled in the stunning red rocks of Arizona, Sedona is not just a pretty sight; it inspires many to explore their creative side. Growing up here opened my eyes to the world of art and creativity. My father, who was an artist, painted with such passion that it ignited a similar love for art within me.

As the child of an artist, I was constantly surrounded by art during my formative years. My mother also ensured that if my brothers and I showed interest in something, we would receive lessons. Whether it was drawing, music, dance, crafts, or knitting. I was always doing something creative. I will forever be grateful to have grown up in Sedona and to have parents who nurtured my creativity.

Though I was always drawing as a kid, it was during my time in junior high and high school that I started taking art more seriously. I developed a deep passion for music and started sketching portraits of my favorite singers. This marked the start of my fascination with portraiture, aiming to convey emotions through the eyes in each artwork.

The Pause in My Artistic Journey

Following high school, I relocated to Oregon to pursue studies in art. Soon after, I discovered I was pregnant and made the choice to prioritize parenthood, leading me to put school and art on the backburner. Being a busy parent, I began thinking of art as a hobby and not something I could realistically do as a job. I made sure that art played a significant role in my daughter's early years. We were regularly drawing, painting, knitting, crocheting, and gardening together. That was the most rewarding time of my life, and I wouldn't change it for anything.

A Revival of Creativity

After several years of working different jobs such as screen printing, personal training, and desk job at an internet security company, I had the opportunity to return to school and focus on my art. I received a degree in illustration a couple of years ago and have been fortunate enough to be working full time as an artist ever since. It has been a slow start, but I am finally building up momentum and it is so exciting! Undoubtedly, none of this would have been achievable without the unwavering support of my incredible husband, who patiently stood by me as I established my business.

Connecting with Nature and Animals

As I immersed myself back into art, I began to focus on a new source of inspiration: the animals around me. I have always felt a strong bond with animals and nature, so the transition from creating portraits of people to focusing on animals occurred naturally. My creations took on a life of their own as I began capturing the beauty of domestic pets and wildlife. This connection deepened my appreciation for the natural world. Every portrait I create holds a special place in my heart. When working on a portrait, my primary goal is to capture the essence of each animal's personality and express it on the canvas.

Art as a Form of Meditation

Art is my sanctuary—a medium through which I can express emotions and navigate through chaotic times. For me, creating art involves a concentrated focus that immerses me in the present moment. Each mark I create must have a specific intention and demands my full focus, effectively silencing all the distractions of daily life. It acts as my escape, and I take comfort in knowing that it is always accessible to me.

My deep love for art is undeniable; it's an essential part of my identity. I’ve realized there is no substitute for the joy art brings to my life. Creating art is not just a pursuit; it is woven into the fabric of my being.

Continuing the Artistic Journey

As I reflect on my artistic path, I see how profoundly art has shaped my life. From my early influences in Sedona to rediscovering creativity, art has always been a consistent thread in my journey. I am endlessly grateful to channel my creativity into a fulfilling pursuit—a source of solace, joy, and expression. Art is more than a passion for me; it's my way to navigate the world and find peace. I am eager to see what the future holds in my journey and am thrilled to continue learning and refining my skills.
